The Art of Conscious Dying into the Clear Light

We all have the ability to train ourselves to die consciously by practicing how to die long before it is our time to die... by which time our practice will have become instinctual. By die consciously, I don't necessarily mean awake... I mean immediately aware of what's happening to us when our leave our body, what to expect next and what our options are. In life, through meditation, we can learn to let go to the Light on a daily basis and have some of the experiences we will all have when we make our transition... so there will be no fear or confusion, especially if it happens suddenly, unexpectedly. We free ourselves from our fear of death and learn to appreciate each moment we are alive when we remember that there is another side of life... our spiritual journey. With a diagnosis of terminal or potentially terminal illness, there is so much to take in and acceptance is so far off that most people wait too long for this information to be helpful, but it is never too late... there is however another alternative.

Now, it is time we appointed earthly guides to assist us in getting from here to there, where our Spiritual Guides will meet us and take us to the next phase of our lives. In my 1993 book, Through the Tunnel: A Traveler's Guide to Spiritual Rebirth, I called these spiritual midwives Anubisists, but I think a more modern designation might be Transition Guides.

Transition Guide Trainers may be those with relevant degrees, such as nurses, psychologists, social workers, and alternative therapists, who are able to integrate this training into their current work. Tranistion Guides may be church pastors or lay ministers, hospice volunteers, home health aides, and friends and families of the dying. Coaches could be professionals with counseling degrees, licensed alternative therapists, or ordained ministers who charge a fee or suggest a donation for their services.

My name is Diane Goble transition guidesand I had a near death experience in 1971 at age 30, during which I left my body and the physical world behind, traveled through a tunnel with a Being of Light, and merged with a beautiful golden white Light. I was filled with feelings of love, ecstasy, peace and joy, and remembered that I had returned to my spiritual home once again. I entered into an environment very similar to my familiar earth world but in an incredibly different dimension of the universe where we, as our Soul-Self, continue to exist and evolve toward God-Consciousness through our experiences of becoming human beings. I realized we are truly spiritual beings having occasional human being experiences. My reason for returning to my body was to continue my Soul's mission of helping others overcome fear of death through learning the art of conscious dying into the Light that is the Source of our Being... ultimately GOD (however one conceptualizes that word or sound). After 36 years of studying, practicing meditation and being a spiritual counselor, I'm convinced that the practice of conscious dying is the path to higher consciousness and my guides tell me it is time to make this information available to all who are ready to hear it.

This information is really for everyone because everyone of us is going to go through this process we call dying and, since any next breath could be our last, there is wisdom in being prepared. It is especially poignant for people who have already received a terminal diagnosis, as well as for the elderly, but it will ease your transition whether you die suddenly, unexpectedly or after a long illness. It is something that can be practiced and integrated into your life, along with your religious rituals or meditation practice, so it becomes second nature. You can work with an energy or light healer to become familiar with the experience and work through your life review, and forgiveness and gratitude issues while still in body, to ease your transition and evolve toward higher consciousness. When death comes, you will immediately realize that you've just died and you will know what to do next, avoiding a period of confusion and fear most newly departed experience because they don't believe they just died.

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

- Khalil Gibran, from The Prophet

We live in a culture of death denial-- it's not going to happen to me. So it's a lot to ask of most folks to consider even looking into this when they are young and healthy. But if you are undergoing treatment for a potentially fatal disease or if your mind is starting to go and dementia/Alzheimer's is a possibility or you are losing control of your body from MS or ALS or AIDs, studying this information well ahead of time will prepare you for a peaceful transition, whenever it comes, no matter what condition you are in when your body dies.

Creating your own Guidebook to Conscious Dying according to your own belief system and practicing as often as you are comfortable with it as you are nearing death awareness means during one of those practice sessions, you will rise from your physical body, awaken to the other side, and know where you are and to look for the Light. You will know immediately that your body has died, but you did not, and that you have an opportunity to visit and say good-bye to family and friends who aren't aware of your passing before the silver cord is broken, and that you are on your way back home. You'll know what to expect and what to avoid and where to turn if you find yourself having a frightening experience.

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because dawn has come.

-- Rabindranath Tagore

The following are suggestions for study for those interested in working with the dying or if you are currently a caregiver for a dying person. Nothing beats experience in this field. If you are currently with someone who is dying in either a personal or professional capacity, continue what you are doing, and start reading the Recommended Readings and Online Resources. Talk to your loved one or patient about conscious dying and work on it together. If not a caregiver at this time, begin doing volunteer work with Hospice, the Twilight Brigade, your local hospital, church or community organization to experience being around terminally ill and dying people, and their families, to help you decide if this kind of work is really for you. Don't try pushing this on others but be open to talking about it if it comes up in conversation. There are no "jobs" for Transition Guides currently so we are on our own as to how to integrate this work into our own professions or passions, but as the population ages and people live longer, it will become a field in its own right as more people look into alternative end of life choices, including aid-in-dyng.

If you are one who is dying, study this information for yourself and if you can't find a Transition Guide in your area, find a friend or family member who is willing to study with you and help you make your final plans or start a study group so others may learn to help. I am available to answer your questions and help you along the way by email.

There is no goal better than this one: to know as you lie on your deathbed that you lived your true life, and you did whatever made you happy.

-- Steve Chandler, 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself

All truth passes through three stages.

First, it is ridiculed.

Second, it is violently opposed.

Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

-- Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (1788 - 1860)
